Capcom has an obsession with toes! Why else would they save us so often, and why one of the answers in MM Battlenetwork 4 is "toes"?

Reply Firecat1311, October 28th, 2011, 7:08 pm

@Iwillbenapo: The word "mask" is actually very rarely used in professional game development, if ever >w>
But yeah, for everyone else, the "mask" is the invisible box over an in-game character's sprite that controls all collisions (bumping against walls, getting hit by enemies, etc.)

Reply The_mad_one, October 28th, 2011, 8:36 pm

@Iwillbenapo & @Firecat1311:
Except the toe is not invisible, so a mask has little to do with it.

Unless you reason that the mask is the thing causing all collisions, but then you might as well say the whole game works because they implemented collision detecting things, which seems rather obvious anyway...

If they even used masks. Just because Game Maker uses them, doesn't mean everything does and did and will.

Felt like mentioning that.

Reply Firecat1311, October 28th, 2011, 9:12 pm

@The_mad_one: Virtually every game in existence (both 2D and 3D, but the three-dimensional mask is usually rectangular prism or collection of prisms) uses masks, but the word itself is seldom used and masks themselves are so commonly used that they are hardly even mentioned, due to the fact that they are taken for granted in any quality game.
The mask itself is invisible (who wants a rectangle over every sprite?), but it covers visible and invisible parts of the sprite to make the collision-detecting box a proper rectangle, thus avoiding having a strand of hair, for example, sticking out of the sprite determine collision. In Megaman's case, the toe is part of the sprite so it is enclosed in the mask. They could have just as easily made the sprite protrude from the mask by a pixel or two, so all pixels outside the mask count as unsubstantial, but that just makes the "Toe Power!" joke all the more funny, since it pokes fun at physical improbabilities as well as silly programming bits >w<

@IwillbenapoPRODUCTIONS & @Firecat1311:
My point is that his toe is standing on the floor, so a transparent area has nothing to do with it. :3

In fact, I just tested, some of his toe and an even bigger part of his arm actually falls through the walls. If they did use a mask (you never know in old software, in those times everyone made their own ideas), it's smaller than the sprite.

Reply Firecat1311, October 29th, 2011, 5:49 am

@The_mad_one: I did some testing of my own, and it seems the only reason that those extra parts pass through walls is that they're not contained in the mask. This is because the jumping, walking, etc. sprites, for the sake of keeping Megaman's head mostly centered to look more natural, are actually shifted several pixels, thus moving outside the mask (I mentioned that this is possible before). As you would expect, the masks are ALWAYS, except for exceptions such as ducking and sliding, kept the same size to avoid sudden collision issues (such as getting stuck if you jump directly next to a wall) and this leads to some inconsistencies in what parts of each sprite might have to poke out.
Sorry if I seem to be getting into technicalities here, but I do quite a bit of game programming and it's essential for these kind of things to be just right >u>

Reply The_mad_one, October 29th, 2011, 6:29 am

@Firecat1311:
I know this stuff. X3

One of my tests was standing on an edge and shuffling sideways, His rear toe did not move, but he fell through the floor before reaching the end of the toe, so this really isn't an issue of too big a hitbox.

Just a toe standing on the edge and Mega Man not caring about trivial things like falling over.

Reply Shadow_Da_Hedgie, October 29th, 2011, 7:52 am

Mega Man and his amazing toes.

If only he put the same effort he puts into strengthening his toes into learning how to use his elbow joints to aim his buster, and his knee joints to duck.

Last panel: WHO NEEDS LADDERS?

@ the random one form the future: while that sounds like a good idea... Two good things don't always equal something awesome. The two universes often collide in Dave's Question Corner... And it's not too bad there. But, this is them playing the games as they are. Mega is a bit different. They go to Wily's fortress for the first time when they fight the Mega Man 3 robot masters. And there is no *spoiler blocked* in sight.

Mega is how DJ thinks the Mega Man series should have gone, probably maybe?

This is them playing through the games and their original canon storylines. I don't think the two would mix all that well. I could be wrong.

Reply Djoing, October 29th, 2011, 8:02 am

@Shadow_Da_Hedgie:
It's not at all how I think it should have gone.
I just made the comic with next to no info about the series, and created my own thing. I think the games shouldn't at all have gone like in Mega.

@Firecat1311: The "mask" is usually called a hitbox.

EDIT: WAIT CRAP MAD BEAT ME TO IT!!!

Reply The_mad_one, November 20th, 2011, 10:14 am

@peeeeeerson:
They both work. Hitbox is more commonly used for things hitting the subject, like projectiles. Mask is more common for the subject hitting other things, like walls and floors.

But you can use them both either way.

Mask is also used for touchable items (such as buttons) on touch screens. Hitbox is a bit awkward for that, but seems valid enough, I guess.

I just noticed that there is a little bit of foreshadowing. They show (part of) the miniboss that you fight twice when you revisit the stage.
