TMO's Nemesis.... DISAPPEARING BLOCKS!

If you do another awards thing at the end of this game, I think those blocks might end upw ith an award.

Reply awsome guy, August 31st, 2011, 4:08 pm

Okay i know im gonna get yelled at for saying this but im saying it anyway
Dj and the_mad_one this comic is really slipping, it used to be smart, witty, funny, puntastic, but now all your comics are jump jump die rush fancy picture horrible punchline to busy gameover screen, you really need to find someway to save this comic. Also dj i think you should start updating mega more because currently i think its better than wcda. And madone this is the fanboy part of me talking but i think you should make a comic rival to mega called proto that would be awesome
I fall prey to many of the same faults but the diffrence between me and you is i have 5 fans and you have 500

Okay im done and im ready to be yelled at

Reply RedJac, August 31st, 2011, 4:45 pm

@Shadow_Da_Hedgie: Those blocks BETTER get the award!

Reply Shadow_Da_Hedgie, August 31st, 2011, 4:49 pm

@awsome guy: Um, what are you looking at? The comic is the same it's always been. What you're describing is how the comic has always been, although sometimes there was more padding between the deaths. But it'd take ages to get through all the games if they put so much padding all time, plus, as they play, they get more skilled so they get hurt and have trouble with things less.

Mega should probably be updated more often, but Djoing DOES have a life of his own. As for TMO making a comic rival to Mega called Proto... why? Just why? :S What's the point of doing that? If TMO wanted to do it, he probably would have already.

Djoing and Tmo have, as you say, 500 fans. I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing if they've managed to gain that many.

Reply Djoing, August 31st, 2011, 4:59 pm

@Shadow_Da_Hedgie:
I think that last sentence was a little uncalled for.

Reply Shadow_Da_Hedgie, August 31st, 2011, 5:04 pm

@Djoing: *Edit edit edit* Better?

Reply awsome guy, August 31st, 2011, 5:08 pm

@Shadow_Da_Hedgie:
Thanks for the inspirational words id like you to read my comics than get back to me on that
But look at some of the mm1 comics than look at some of the mm3 comics, sure theyve gone up in visuals but as far as content goes im not so sure
It used to be survival of the fittest and they weren't but they are now so with the ability to play megaman games with ease also comes the lack of hilarious moments of them failing. Jumping into a hole besides contrary belief is not funny and niether is "you didnt jump stupididly" so maybe what they could do is try more often to fail. It dosent sound good when you say it that way but in the end its better
I know dj has a life i have one too its called homework, but mad and dj make these comics in advance so this one was most likely made during summer
I am a huge dj and mad fan so ill never unfav this comic but im posting this so maybe itll help increase there awesomeness
If you still disagree with me read mm1 than read mm3

Reply awsome guy, August 31st, 2011, 5:13 pm

@awsome guy:
Okay my life is more than homework but i was trying to make a point

Reply Shadow_Da_Hedgie, August 31st, 2011, 5:14 pm

@awsome guy: I've read both. Yes, it used to be survivial of the fittest, but they've gotten better at these types of games for the most part, so obviously they aren't going to die as often. Expecting them to remain at the same level of skill is just silly. They shouldn't TRY to fail, because then it'll be forced and keeping count of the deaths would mean NOTHING.

I understand what you mean, and I apologize. I wouldn't say the quality of the comic has gone down though.

Reply awsome guy, August 31st, 2011, 5:29 pm

@Shadow_Da_Hedgie:
Yeah just one more thing id like to add, a little padding would be nice and im not expecting them to stay at the same level but that they should try mixing it up more and if they see a good joke or something if they die or if it means getting hurt i think they should go for it, they probably already do
One reason i think is why the comic isnt very engaging anymore is because they are currently uninspired
And i still think mad should make proto, its probably occured to him once or twice and i think he should go for it, and if he does id like to be the first to know

Reply Namm_killazilla, August 31st, 2011, 5:52 pm

@awsome guy: Really? Really? "Proto"?

Also, 'I Can't Defeat Anyone' basically consisted of djoing getting hit by stuff and TMO yelling "HATRED" a lot.

Reply awsome guy, August 31st, 2011, 5:53 pm

@Namm_killazilla:
yeah that was funny
you don't think so?

Reply Shadow_Da_Hedgie, August 31st, 2011, 6:54 pm

@awsome guy: It was funny, but I don't think that's quite what he was getting at.

And if the WHOLE comic was exactly the same all the way through all 11 classic Mega Man games, not counting the two Power Battle arcade games... That would eventually get boring.

Reply awsome guy, August 31st, 2011, 9:03 pm

@Shadow_Da_Hedgie:
i didn't mean it in every comic i was just saying when they did it it was funny now if they did that through the whole comic that would suck

Reply Floydyboy, September 1st, 2011, 2:23 am

@awsome guy: So you're saying that the earlier comics, which spawned from the rage of not being able to beat a video game, are better than the newer comics, with higher quality and jokes that are actually funny?

Flawed logic is flawed.

Reply The_mad_one, September 1st, 2011, 3:20 am

@argument:

Thanks to all of you for your opinions, they're very much appreciated. Thanks to awesome guy in particular, since it's pretty hard to criticize a popular comic. Also, thanks all of you for remaining civil about this, so I don't have to delete the argument. :)

@awsome guy:
One (rather big) thing though, I can't manage to find out what exactly it is you want. Most of your arguments are about what this comic has become, but not what it was (in other words, what you think it should be).

Here's what I got:
"It used to be smart, witty, funny, puntastic"
"It used to be survival of the fittest and they weren't"

Now, I'm not going to try and disprove your opinion or anything (that's not even possible), but I'll provide the relevant facts we're stuck with:
What's clear is that you want to see more 'fails', I'll start by promising we won't be failing on purpose. What we're currently doing to increase 'fail' rate is determining the play order by fan votes, which apparently didn't result in that easy a match-up (check out Hard Man's page count...) and the swapping places after each death, meaning we get half the practice at average.

Your other issue seems to be that you don't like the humour this time. Or rather, that the kind of humour you like has disappeared since MM1. With the four words you gave me, I cannot determine what sort of humour this is. It might also be that the type of humour is still there, but is over-shadowed by other stuff.

Please, do remember that we use the actual happenings AND the actual dialogue from our play-throughs. This means that, even though you don't think it's funny, Djoing said "You didn't jump stupidly!". Also note that it's not the humour value of this phrase that made us put this up, but the fact that I cleared the disappearing blocks for the first time.
If you could help us determine what it is you're missing in the jokes, we might be able to do something. We really want to make sure not to be 'acting' while playing by saying things because they bring easy laughs, so this might be very, very hard.
Oh, about the bad puns, that's kind of a gimmick of the MM3 arc. X3 The puns we actually put effort in are in the death boxes.

Now, one final thing, I'll explain how I think the comic changed, it might well help:
Throughout the comic, we've been adding increasingly more detail of the happenings. In MM1, the total of panels with actual boss fighting up to the Yellow Devil was:
3.
One of which without any movement in it:
http://candefeatanyone.smackjeeves.com/comics/987189/gutsman-page-3/
All the other boss battle panels just had Dj or the boss standing next to the explosion of the other or standing there doing nothing yet. Granted, the victory versus Bombman had a flame still in it, let's say 4 panels then.
Throughout the Wily stages, we increased the detail of the battles, but except for the so entitled 'epic rounds', still little to no battle info.

Throughout MM2, we started adding more detail to boss battles. This knocked up the average amount of pages per stage quite a bit, from 5 to 12.

Now the stages in MM2 were not as detailed. Being pummeled by molez was a two panels of running unharmed through an area of molez, an enemy that suddenly chased Djoing was symbolized by its remaining razor blade chasing him. An enemy that fired itself into pieces is just laying on the floor. That's just examples of a single page:
http://candefeatanyone.smackjeeves.com/comics/1017150/metalman-page-3/
Now this did improve, Wood Man's stage shows most of what happened. Still, it's mostly just the snapshots of the highlights.

In MM3, we started showing the whole stage. First run shows pretty much every room (except the most boring of rooms, we won't waste your time with those) and when we die, we continue the detail from that point on as soon as we get there. This turns out to have knocked the average amount of pages per stage up to about 20, we'll be thinking of a way to lower it in MM4. ^^'

This increased accuracy of what happened is the most important improvement in my eyes, but I'll sum up a few other things:
The bosses and enemies get a bit of personality now, we upped the effects, increased the frequency of 'epic pages' and improved our sprites. We also take our notes better, which is related to that detail thing I wrote 3 paragraphs on earlier.

I wonder if people will even bother to read this. X3

Reply The_mad_one, September 1st, 2011, 3:30 am

I'll dump the stuff unrelated to above post here:

I'm not planning on making a 'Proto' or anything of the sorts. Not only would it feel like ripping off Dj's comic, it'd feel like just following his lead. Just because I'm working together with Djoing on this, doesn't mean I don't want to go my own way in comics. ;)

"but mad and dj make these comics in advance so this one was most likely made during summer"
Thaaat's not correct. We try to play a few stages ahead of the comic, so we won't hit a wall when the pages catch up, also to evade some spoilers, but the pages come way later.
We're trying to build a buffer now though, so we can increase the update rate later. As I type this, there are 12 pages not yet visible to you, so the pages are 11 days, 6 hours and 30 minutes ahead.

Edit: Oh and another thing, we have 370 fans, not 500. X3

@The_mad_one: I read it all, but your icon makes me feel like it should say: "OMFG CHILDREN, STFU"

Hey Mad, I know that DJ won't tell me what time it is where you live, but I have a question. What time can we see the comic?

Reply The_mad_one, September 1st, 2011, 11:07 am

@Iwillbenapo: We already mentioned we live in the Netherlands, which is GMT+1. The pages go up at 6 pm GMT.

You can either calculate this towards your own time zone, or just check the time this page went online, it's the same every day.

Right now it'll be 53 minutes till the next pages comes up.

Reply Iwillbenapo (Guest), September 1st, 2011, 11:29 am

So you're saying it was 5:07PM there when you posted that comment? If so, then that means we are 6 hours apart.

Reply Shadow_Da_Hedgie, September 1st, 2011, 1:37 pm

I think Smackjeeves might operate on a different time-zone... I remember sending those comments from my iPod in the middle of the night... like, 2-4 am... but it says 10 am.

Reply The_mad_one, September 1st, 2011, 2:08 pm

@ Shadow_Da_Hedgie: I'm pretty sure you can set your time zone somewhere in your profile. Mine perfectly shows dutch time (except when DST switches, it gets confused for a while).

Either that, or it automatically scans where you are and uses that.

Reply awsome guy, September 1st, 2011, 4:13 pm

@The_mad_one:
Wow, okay here's what i have to say after all that less is more
And im dissapointed to here your not doing proto
Anyways this comic deserves 500 fans and trust me that day will come soon so let me add to my 5 words
When i first saw the comic (during mm2 when you were fighting everyone again with dave) i thought wow a spinoff of mega nice job djoing it looked so similiar and the ones i read were just kill crashman kill bubbleman die on woodman i liked the puns but that was it so i didnt fav it
But later i looked at it again this time from the begining and i saw two brothers working to complete at the time an impossible game, i liked the 3 panel format when there were 30 comics with 3 panels and i know if you swapped back to that at a daily pace your 370 fans would get mad. If you look through some of your more recent comics you could shorten it to 3 panels and take out the blubber, thats what i dont like
When i first looked at this comic i thought you were friends not brothers and you had normal mega man sprites, when you were like that readers could relate to you, readers cant relate to ninjas with trees on there heads but they can relate to a ninja who gives out cool points because many do that themselves
I realize now that many of my hopes are irrational because you have improved and you have done things that if you changed many would be upset

But i still think proto is a great idea, someone
else try it!

And sorry for any gramatical errors like hedgie im posting from my ipod

Reply Afrohawkman, September 1st, 2011, 5:08 pm

I still think it's funny, witty and puntastic, I don't know what you're talking about.

Seriously though, for an 8-bit comic you can really tell a lot of work and effort is put into this awesome comic. It's great looking, the boss battles are spectacular and creative, the stages are accurate to the normal deaths that occur in this game and the fails are pretty funny. It'd be kind of boring if they didn't fail at all honestly. Otherwise it'd feel kind of forced or staged (no pun intended), here it's nice and varied with the length of each stage. Not to mention the effects, no matter how small or epic they are, are really well-thought out and used quite well, not to mention the variations of comics is simply spectacular, it never feels like it's getting old.

Honestly this comic deserves more fans than it has. It's a pretty awesome comic and I can't see why anyone would be upset about it. Keep up the good work guys.
